The Barton men’s soccer team showed it was among the best in the Jayhawk Conference all season long, posting a 14-2-1 record. When it came time to hand out individual awards, the Cougars were rewarded for their good play.
Barton sophomore standout Renan Sousa was named the Offensive Player of the Year in the conference and three of his teammates joined him on the first team. Pratt coach Kevin Kewley earned Coach of the Year while Leonardo Catarina of Cloud County was named the Defensive Player of the Year.
Five more Cougars earned honorable mention as nine Cougars in all were recognized.
Sousa is coming off a tremendous year for Barton. The sophomore midfielder from Brazil scored 43 points during the season. He finished with 14 goals and 15 assists. The 15 assists in second best all-time in Barton history.
Sousa was also named first team All-Region VI – a repeat selection from last year. Sousa was a second team all-conference pick as a freshman.
Lucas Alves, a freshman from Brazil, also had a big offensive season for Barton with 13 goals. His efforts earned him a spot as a forward on the first team. Alves finished the year with 29 points. Alves was a first team all-region pick as well.
Joining Sousa and Alves on the first team was Japan sophomore Jiro Barriga Toyama. Toyama finished third on the team with 14 points on four goals and six assists. Toyama, who missed more than half the season due to an injury, repeated as a first team pick He was also a repeat selection as first team All-Region VI.
Defensively, Ireland sophomore Jamie Cox was voted to the first team. He was part of a Barton defense that posted six shutouts and allowed more than one goal just five times in 17 games. Cox was a first team all-region selection as well.
The Cougar defense received most of its recognition at honorable mention as two more defenders and the Barton goalkeeper were tabbed.
Japan sophomore Kato Endo and Goddard freshman Daniel Weaver were honorable mention picks at defender. Bruce Turner, a freshman from Florida, was an honorable mention pick at keeper.
Rounding out the honorable mention selecstions the Cougars were midfielder Sergio Ribeiro and Grayson Carroll. Ribeiro, a freshman from Brazil, finished with 10 points on three goals. Grayson, a freshman from Oklahoma, spent a lot of time defending for Barton as well.
