Tough offensive night spells doom for Barton women at Hutchinson
barton community college basketball
Barton led wire-to-wire on the way to a 70-45 win over Pratt.
HUTCHINSON – There are rough offensive outings for basketball teams every once in a while.
Then there was the night the Barton women went through Wednesday evening at the Sports Arena in Hutchinson.
Barton didn’t make its second field goal until 4:31 remained in the half on the way to a 67-43 loss to Hutchinson in Jayhawk West play.
The Cougars have now lost back-to-back games to the top teams in the West but remain in third place in the standings. The Cougars are 7-6 in the West, one game clear of a trio of teams. Colby, Pratt and Dodge City are all 6-7. The Cougars are 11-11 overall.
Hutchinson stayed within one game of the West lead with a 12-1 mark. The Blue Dragons, ranked No. 8, are 20-2 overall. Seward, 13-0, leads with West. The 18-3 Saints are ranked No. 12.
From the beginning, it was obvious it was going to be a long night. Queen Ulabo made a layup with 8:20 left in the first quarter. That pulled Barton to within 4-2. It would be another 14 minutes before the Cougars would get their next field goal.
Hutch scored 12 straight before a Richelle Turney free throw. It was 20-4 after the first quarter. The Cougars would make three more free throws in the second period and trailed 31-7 with 4:32 left in the half.
That is when Barton got its second field goal of the game on a Turney 3-pointer. By that time, the damage had been done.
The Cougars trailed by 22 at the half, 37-15, after shooting just 14 percent.
It wasn’t like Hutchinson was tearing things up offensive. The Blue Dragons shot just 40 percent for the game and made only 5-of-23 3-pointers during the win.
However, those numbers looked pretty good compared to the Cougars.
That first field goal Ulabo made just 100 seconds in would be her only one as the Cougars second-leading scorer finished just 1-for-9.
Turney, the leading scorer on the season for Barton did hit her average of 15 but it took 20 shots to get there. The sophomore was 5-of-20 and led Barton with nine rebounds.
Barton’s other double figure scorer on the season, Vanessa Oduah, finished 2-of-11.
That’s a combined 8-of-40 from the team’s top three scorers.
As a team, the Cougars finished 14-of-58 for 24 percent.
After the back-to-back battles with top teams in the West, the Cougars get the team at the bottom of the league next.
Barton will wrap up the first trip through the West with a trip to Garden City Saturday. Garden sits eighth in the West with a 3-10 mark and are 8-14 overall. Tip is set for 2 pm.
