WICHITA — Alec Carlson of Pawnee Heights had some track business to take care of before he starts his basketball career at Colby Community College.
Carlson captured a gold medal in the long jump (22-63/4) with a career-best leap, finished runner-up in the triple jump (44-91/2) and fourth in the javelin (160-5), an inch off his season best throw. He'll added a silver medal in Saturday's 1A high jump (6-2) after a career best of 6-9.
Carlson's was close to breaking the Tigers' school long jump record (22-81/2) and possibly the 1A record (23-0) by Baileyville's Ed Broxterman.
"That's the best I've long jumped all year," Carlson said. "I hit the board just right all day, so it went really good. I wanted the school record. I popped a great jump in the finals, but it was a scratch. I might've had 23 feet."
Carlson was off his season-best triple jump (46-6), but held the lead until Madison's Bryson Turner soared 45-31/2 in the finals.
"That's the best Bryson was jumped all year," Carlson said. "It wasn't my best jump today. But it was a good day. I was fighting a little quad problem running down the runway, but I pushed through it."
PAWNEE HEIGHTS GIRLS — Tiger Olivia Hands is ranked second in the 1A discus (113-8).
ST. JOHN BOYS — Quade Smith is ranked third in the 1A 800 meters (2:03.19).
