Panthers sweep Garden City baseball

GARDEN CITY – Great Bend Panther pitcher Carson Umphres had reason to celebrate when he locked down a hard-fought 4-3 Western Athletic baseball victory over Garden City Friday. Umphres struck out two batters and catch a pop fly to end the ballgame. Panther centerfielder Bradley Hopkins saved the ballgame when he ran down a sixth-inning line drive by Buffalo Emilio Zundt.

Umphres (3-1) worked a masterful 91-pitch outing and shut out the Buffaloes in the final three innings. Great Bend also rallied from a 4-1 deficit to win the opener 17-4.

Great Bend (8-4, 4-2) stays on target to secure second place in the Western Athletic Conference. The Panthers return home Tuesday against Hays Thomas More Prep.

Garden City (4-8, 1-5 WAC) drops to fourth place in the WAC.

PANTHERS 17, GARDEN CITY 4 (G1) – Great Bend exploded for a 14-run sixth inning to blow past Garden City 17-4 in the opener. Ten consecutive Panthers reached base against ineffective Garden City reliever Luis Varela.

Panther reliever Tyler Stuhlsatz (2-0) worked three innings to earn the victory.

Ian Premer tripled, scored two runs and drove home four runs. Edwin Chavez doubled, scored twice and drove in four runs. Stuhlsatz delivered three singles with an RBI. Trenton Kern and Koehn Ribordy each drove home two runs. Carson Umphres and Bradley Hopkins each drove in a run.

PANTHERS 4, GARDEN CITY 3 (G2) – The Panthers rallied from a 3-1 deficit.

Umphres delivered the game’s signature play with a game-winning 3-run fifth-inning double off that scored Hunter Herrman, Carson Poe and Stuhlsatz. Herrman singled. Poe reached base safely on a bunt. Stuhlsatz walked off Garden City pitcher Henry Bors (0-2).

Premer scored a first-inning run on Owen Kaiser’s groundout. Hayden Bailey scored on Varela’s first-inning groundout for a 1-1 tie.

Garden City led 3-1. Iziah Salinas scored on Varela’s fourth-inning single. Carl Bors scored on a bases-loaded walk. Umphres retired Zundt on a fly out to leave the bases loaded.
