Carmel to clinch a 5A state baseball tournament berth. The Panthers (23-5) join 5A state qualifiers Blue Valley Southwest (21-6), Shawnee Heights (21-7), Hays High (18-8), Goddard Eisenhower (18-10), KC Piper (17-10) and Valley Center (17-11). PANTHERS 5, KAPAUN-MT. CARMEL 4 — Panther Carson Umphreys delivered a hard-earned complete-game performance, a 4-hit game, an inside-the-park homer and four RBIs. Panther third base coach Jason Perry waved Umphreys around third base in a 2-run homer that scored Slade Mohr for a 4-4 tie. The Crusaders scored three earned runs off Umphreys with an aggressive approach that produced nine hits. The Panthers' defense saved Umphreys. Catcher Kaiser threw out Noah Schreck on an attempted steal. Umphreys picked off Charlie Barrier at first base. Third baseman Trenton Kern tagged Chase Pelfrey in a rundown.
