4 Panther bowlers qualify for state tournament

HUTCHINSON – Great Bend Panthers Zoey Mayberry (495) and Brooklynn Mayberry (474) earned 5A state bowling entries in Tuesday's bowling regional. 

Zoey Mayberry placed eighth with scores of 167-168-160. Brooklynn Mayberry finished 11th with games scores of 170-161-143. Zoey Mayberry averaged 200 and Brooklynn Mayberry 152 during the season.

Barton Cougar bowling signee Zoey Mayberry has placed sixth (591), 10th (576) and 13th (565) at the 5A state bowling championship. She is a 2-time state team champion. 

First-team All-WAC Brooklynn Mayberry has placed 18th (544) and 51st (448) at 5A state while being a member of the 2024 state champion. 

The Panther girls were one quality game away from earning a team berth.

After two series games, Great Bend's girls built an 86-pin lead on Wichita Carroll. The Panther posted competitive scores of 647 and 659 to build the 86-pin lead.

The Golden Eagles swung the momentum with a 646-565 advantage in the third game to slice the Panthers' lead to five pins. Great Bend posted third-game series scores of 160, 145, 143 and 117. 

The Panthers led Carroll by 34 pins with two Baker games left when the Golden Eagles gained 66 pins (200-134) in the decisive third game. Carroll won the four Baker games with a 655-607 advantage to finish 43 pins ahead of the Panthers, 2,521 to 2,478.

Two-time Great Bend state qualifier Josh Manning (584, 198-142-244) and Western Athletic Conference Most Valuable bowler Daegan Miller (548, 187-167-194) qualified for 5A state as individuals.

The Panther boys also placed fourth, one spot away from a team berth.
