NICKERSON GIRLS 54, LARNED 22

NICKERSON — Nickerson's 6-foot-2 Ava Jones personally outscored the Larned girls with 30 points as the Panthers routed the Indians 54-22 Friday.

The sophomore Jones scored 21 first-half points as the Lady Panthers eliminated any doubt. She scored Nickerson's first 14 points for a 19-8 first-quarter lead. Jones has received a handful of Division I scholarship offers.

Turnovers and cold shooting were again a problem for Larned. Larned's Reagan Krehbiel nailed a long 3-pointer just as the final buzzer sounded for Larned's only points of the final stanza.

Hot-shooting Nickerson raced to a halftime lead of 38-13 and extended it to 49-19 after three quarters, resulting in a running clock for the fourth period.

Nickerson made 22 of 49 field goal attempts for 45% shooting and converted 5 of 11 free throws with nine turnovers. Kieryn Ontjes scored eight points and Alexis Allen added six. Nickerson (7-1) plays Hesston Tuesday.

Larned converted six of 21 attempts and made 6 of 11 free throws and committed 25 turnovers. Julie Tapia and Liz Herrera led the Indians with five apiece while Cadee Upson added four. Larned (2-5) plays Haven Tuesday.

Larned’s free throws pace victory

Special to the Tribune

NICKERSON – Larned’s boys put together two strong quarters to defeat Nickerson 52-45 in Friday’s Central Kansas League basketball game.

Larned made 16 of 44 field goal attempts for 36% but converted 16 of 25 free throws. Post player Layton Crosby scored 17 points. Andreus Tucker scored nine points and Dillen Smith and Ethan Haas added eight apiece. Larned (4-3) plays Haven Tuesday.

Larned outscored Nickerson 14-6 in the second quarter as they found their "offensive legs" and grabbed a 20-16 edge, a lead they would never relinquish.

The cold-shooting Indians made 8 of 26 field goal attempts in the first half but good rebounding and a stingy defense forced Nickerson into 14 turnovers.

Larned outscored Nickerson 20-13 to forge a 40-29 lead after three quarters.

"We got off to a slow start, especially shooting the ball, so the guys focused on defense and rebounding,” said Larned coach Jerrod Smith. “We got some easy baskets off of the press and that helped."

Larned coasted in the fourth quarter and spent time at the charity stripe.

"I was glad we were knocking down free throws,” Smith said. “Nickerson fouled playing catchup and got us into the double bonus. Our guys made their free throws. That turned out to be the difference.”

Larned forced 21 Nickerson turnovers as the Panthers made 17 of 39 field goal attempts. Matt Crossman and Carson Linn each scored 13 point and Phillipe Manga added nine. Nickerson (0-7) plays Hesston Tuesday.
