PHILLIPSBURG 52, HOISINGTON 41

PHILLIPBURG — Hoisington didn't beat Phillipsburg, but Cardinal coach Kyle Haxton won the chess match against Phillipsburg coach Keith Sides. Sides celebrated early and substituted for his starters late in the fourth quarter. He later panicked and put his starters back in when the Cardinals played to the finish in a 52-41 substate basketball showdown.

The Cardinals sliced a 19-point lead to 44-39 on Layton Haxton's 3-pointer to cap a 17-3 scoring run. The Panthers elected to delay rather than shoot and it nearly backfired when they converted 3 of 12 free throws. But Joel Ford converted 10 free throws as the Panthers made 16 of 28 free throws in the fourth quarter.

The Cardinals faced a tough whistle as several block/charge calls swung the Panthers' way, including several which fouled out standout Bralen Thompson, who scored 11 points. Noah Dolezel added seven points and several blocked shots. The Cardinals committed 30 turnovers, 21 in the first half.

"Our team continued to fight," said Hoisington coach Kyle Haxton. "Noah Dolezal played like a warrior."

The Panthers sealed the deal on Ford's six free throws after a technical foul. Ford scored 21 points. The Panthers made 20 of 39 free throws.

"It was a physical game where our guards played through body bumps. Once we slowed down, we adapted and created a better tempo," said Kyle Haxton. "We weren't tough enough defensively. We struggled shooting from the perimeter."
