ST. JOHN — St. John's Tanner Halling dominated with 30 points, nine rebounds and eight blocked shots in a 67-28 Central Prairie League victory over Otis-Bison in Friday's Central Prairie League basketball opener.

Marshall Woolf delivered 13 points and seven assists for St. John (5-2, 1-0 CPL). Collin Halling added 10 points. Jayce Kohls scored 10 points and Dalton Regan added seven points for Otis-Bison (2-4, 0-1 CPL).

OTIS-BISON 35, ST. JOHN 32

ST. JOHN — Maddie Wiltse's basket sent the game to overtime as the Cougars edged upset-minded St. John 35-32 in Friday's Central Prairie League basketball opener.

The Tigers led 29-25, but missed three shots with two turnovers in the final minutes of regulation. Cougar Cora Anderson scored a basket and Maddie Wiltse scored on Maci Wiltse's assist for a 29-29 tie. In overtime, Anderson and Danica Bartonek scored baskets and Cristen Trapp hit two free throws. Anderson scored 10 points and Bartonek added eight points.

St. John (3-4, 0-1) effectively collapsed its defense in the paint to slow down the Cougars. St. John's Darby Smith hounded Maddie Wiltse, who managed five points. Kaylynn Claussen led the Tigers with eight points and Erin Crissman added seven points.

NESS CITY – The Ellinwood Eagles are officially for real.

Britton Dutton and David Hammeke each scored 23 points to spark the Eagles past Ness City 61-44 in Saturday’s Central Prairie League showdown. Dutton scored 17 first-half points. Hammeke scored 10 second-half points.

Ellinwood (6-1, 1-1 CPL) led 40-22 at halftime. Ness City (5-2, 2-1 CPL) captured last year’s 2A state basketball championship.

NESS CITY — Ellinwood’s Mya Maxwell exploded for 24 points and 11 rebounds to spark the Eagles past Ness City 47-42 in Saturday’s Central Prairie League showdown. The Eagles forced 32 turnovers and earned 21 steals.

“This group has a defensive mindset,” said Ellinwood coach Andrew Cherry. “We have a lot of speed and a lot of length.” 

Ellinwood (5-2, 2-0 CPL) outscored the Eagles 32-15 in the second and third quarters to take command. Ashtin Klepper contributed six steals and six points. Makenzie Flax scored 18 points for Ness City (2-5, 1-2 CPL).
