COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – The first season of Barton wrestling is in the books. A pretty darn good first season at that.

The Cougars took all 10 wrestlers to the NJCAA Championships and finished 15th as a team in season one. Barton was the highest finishing team from Region VI.

In the process, Will Bardezbain earned All-American honors at 125 pounds.

Northeastern Oklahoma won the meet with 152.5 points, well ahead of runner-up Iowa Central with 128. Barton was 15th with 36.5 points.

The Cougars had six wrestlers on the cusp of a top eight finish and All-American honors but only Bardezbain won his match to move into the consolation quarterfinals.

The other five wrestlers – Zach Vesta at 149, Kade Sander at 157, Devon Baker at 174, Tim Johnson at 184, and Jonathan Bowen at 194 came up just short.

Bardezbain opened with a technical fall win then lost to 3rd ranked Cole Verner of Western Wyoming in the second round. Bardezbain won his first three matches in the consolation bracket by fall to advance to the top eight during Friday’s action.

Bardezbain started Saturday with a technical fall win over 2nd ranked Josh Antoine of Nassau to advance the consolation semifinals. There he ran into 8th ranked Blake Walker of Ellsworth, losing 16-5 to fall into the 5th place match.

In that match, Bardezbain won by fall over Andres Tereza of Highline for fifth.

Baker went the furthest in the championship bracket. After receiving a first round bye, Baker and his losing record on the season, upset 7th ranked Tommy Brewster of Clackamas, 10-5, in the second round to move into the quarterfinals.

His championship run ended there with a loss by fall to 4th ranked Preston Lauterbach of Iowa Western. Baker then lost in the second round of eight in the consolation draw to the 3rd ranked wrestler at 174.

Sander came close to earning All-American status. Sander lost in the first round then rolled to a pair of easy wins to put him just one match from the consolation quarterfinals and a top eight finish.

In the round of eight second round, Sander and 8th ranked Brandon Murray of Iowa Central hooked up in a thriller. Murray held a 2-0 lead late in the match when Sander was able to escape to make it 2-1. That, though, would be the final points of the match as the Great Bend freshman missed All-American by a single point at 157.

Vesta, Johnson, and Bowen all lost in the second round then came back through the consolation draw to the consolation round of eight second round. The three lost in that round to just miss a trip to the consolation quarterfinals.

Caysen Smith, Jaden McRoberts, Sean Taborsky, and Justin Scrabro also competed for the Cougars, losing in the consolation round of 16.
