Bat Cats edge past Newton Rebels, 9-7

NEWTON – Late-game scoring and clutch relief pitching sparked the Great Bend Bat Cats past the Newton Rebels 9-7 in Wednesday's wild Sunflower Collegiate League baseball game.

Great Bend trailed 4-2, but outscored the Rebels 7-0 to lead 9-4 after 81/2 innings. Relievers Brian Shadrick, Matt Nedved and Chris Lenocker combined for three shutout innings.

The first-place Bat Cats (7-1) return to Newton (1-7) Friday and play the Rebels Saturday at home.

Jett Forrest's two-run eighth-inning single against Newton reliever Carson Frazier scored Kyle Gates and Brett Freiberg for a 5-4 lead. Forrest scored on Tyler Henry's double for a 6-4 lead.

Bat Cat sparkplug Alex Rodgers scored on a ninth-inning wild pitch. Gates singled home Noah Best and Andrew Enwiya singled home Gates for a 9-4 lead.

Newton's Nick Grade scored on a wild pitch after he tripled home Nolan Riley and Aidan Corrigan in the ninth inning. Reliever Lenocker struck out Barton County's Connor Allen for the final out. 

Enwiya doubled home Rodgers in the first inning. Newton's Thomas Capllonch singled in Corrigan for a 1-1 tie. Tyler Henry homered for a 2-1 Bat Cat lead. 

Riley's two-run single scored Eli Hickman and Andrew Brautman for a 3-2 lead. Brautman singled in Hickman for a 4-2 lead after six innings.

Noah Best singled home Forrest in the seventh-inning to ignite seven consecutive Bat Cat runs.

Cardinals win Ellsworth tennis title ELLSWORTH — Hoisington's No. 1 singles Jasper Pawlowski, No. 2 singles Brody Rossman and No. 2 doubles Kian DeLong/Xander Mooney placed first as the Cardinals won the Ellsworth tennis title April 3 with 67 points. In championship matches, Jasper Pawlowski defeated Cimarron's Landon Houseman, 8-2; Rossman downed Cimarron's Jacob Pando 8-4; and DeLong/Mooney defeated Trego's Lucas Dreher/Mason Yingling 8-6.
