Bat Cats race past Haysville

A rain delay was apparently just what the doctor ordered.

The Great Bend Bat Cats snapped a 2-game losing streak with a dominating 8-1 victory over Haysville in Tuesday’s Sunflower Collegiate League baseball game.

Bat Cats starter Brayden Tower (3-0) and relievers George Austin and Brett Allen combined for a 1-hitter.

Bodi Wallar ignited the victory with a 2-run first-inning homer just as heavy rain pelted Al Burns Memorial Field. After a 40-minute delay, the crafty Tower was unhittable with five innings of no-hit baseball.

The Bat Cats (16-3, 12-2 Sunflower) kept adding runs against Haysville (7-7, 4-6 Sunflower). Haysville visits Great Bend again Wednesday.

Waller doubled and scored on Adam Mustow’s third-inning groundball for a 3-0 lead. Brady Kreutzer singled and scored on a JoJo Nieves fourth-inning squeeze bunt.

Great Bend iced the ballgame with a 4-run seventh inning. Home-run leader Simon Larranaga drilled a 2-run homer that scored Kyle Gates. Mustow scored on Raithan Malone’s RBI single and Dawson French scored when the throw eluded the first baseman for an 8-0 lead.

Haysville spoiled a shutout when Brooks Barry scored on a sacrifice fly by Max Valdez. Barry walked, stole second base and moved to third base on an error. Haysville’s Jayden Hill singled for the Patriots’ only credited hit. Ryan Webster also could’ve been credited with a infield seventh-inning single. Bat Cats shortstop Raithen Malone was tagged with a questionable error after he shifted deep toward third base for Webster's hard-hit groundball.
