Bat Cats win baseball opener

SALINA — Ryan Monson drove home three runs and a trio of pitchers led the Great Bend Bat Cats to a 9-1 victory over the Salina Shock in Wednesday’s Sunflower Collegiate League baseball opener.

The Bat Cats open their home season at 7 p.m. Friday at Veterans Park against the Hutchinson Monarchs.

Dawson Pomeroy singled home Collin Meinert and Hunter Romero scored on an error for a 2-0 lead. Brenden Tauber scored on an error and Monson singled home Meinert for a 4-0 lead.

Salina’s John Olivier singled home Ryan Chargo for the Shocks’ run.

The Bat Cats roughed up reliever Christian Justice for five eighth-inning runs. 

Monson singled home Tauber and Chase Gibson. Romero singled home Meinert. Bloomer singled home Monson. Nolan Riley drove home Romero with a groundout for a 9-1 lead.

Bat Cat starter Tanner Howe and relievers Easton Young and Zach Poe each worked three solid innings. Howe and Poe each struck out three batters.
