Bat Cats roll past Twins

DERBY — The Great Bend Bat Cats lived up to their nickname with three homers and 20 hits in a rousing 15-9 Sunflower Collegiate League baseball victory Monday over the Derby Twins.

The Bat Cats (3-1, 1-0) won their opening Sunflower Collegiate League baseball game heading into a six-game homestand at Al Burns Field. 

Bat Cats Luke Repka and Daunte Freeman each homered and drove home three runs. Barton Community College graduate Nolan Riley drove home three runs.

Riley singled home Repka to start a three-run first inning. Riley scored on a bases-loaded hit batter. Dawson Pomeroy scored on a wild pitch. Riley singled home Brady Michel in the second inning for a 4-0 lead.

Derby’s Justin Bundy homered in the second inning. Thomas Green delivered an RBI single and Dorien Jenkins and Green scored on an error for a 4-4 tie.

The Bat Cats scored 11 consecutive runs for a 15-4 lead.

Repka’s fourth-inning single scored Brady Michel. Repka scored on a bases-loaded sixth-inning walk for a 6-4 lead.

The Bat Cats ripped reliever Aaron Willey for six seventh-inning runs. Alex Guevara and Riley hit RBI singles. Pomeroy’s double scored Guevara and Riley. Freeman blasted a two-run homer and Chandler Bloomer homered for a 13-4 lead. Repka’s two-run homer scored Guevera for a 15-4 lead after 71/2 innings.

Bat Cats pitchers yielded 10 walks and four errors led to seven unearned runs. Derby converted three hit batters and an error into a four-run eighth inning off reliever Zach Poe. Michael Austin’s double scored Bundy and Bryce Donovan. Adrian Salazar’s RBI single closed out the scoring in the ninth inning.
