Panthers sweep Red Demons

DODGE CITY – DeShawna Bryant played the role of Supergirl with seven hits and eight runs batted in to spark Great Bend’s dominating 16-5 and 12-1 softball doubleheader sweep over Dodge City Thursday.

Great Bend (6-3, 5-0 WAC) maintains first place in the Western Athletic Conference for the first time in several years. The Panthers play Hays (5-3, 5-1 WAC) in a single WAC game at home Tuesday.

PANTHERS 16, DODGE CITY 5 (G1) – Bryant hammered home six runs with a perfect 5-for-5 hitting performance with a triple, double and three singles. The Panthers scored six runs in the second inning and tallied nine runs in their final three at-bats.

Panther pitcher Paige Thexton (2-2) yielded one earned run and struck out six batters.

Katherine Mazouch drove home two runs with three hits and three runs scored. Allyssa McCauley drove in two runs and scored twice. Rylee Prilling drove in two runs. Halle Post singled three times, scored twice and drove home a run. Thexton and Lauryn Davis each drove in a run.

Dodge City (1-7, 0-6 WAC) was led by Emma Bell's 3-run homer.

PANTHERS 12, DODGE CITY 1 (G2) – Great Bend broke the game open with an 8-run sixth inning after trailing 1-0 after three innings. Bryant tripled and drove home two runs. Mazouch tripled and drove in two runs. Thexton drove home three runs with a 2-run single and sacrifice fly.

Relief pitcher McCauley restored order after starter Braelyn Turner walked four batters. McCauley (1-0) pitched 42/3 shutout innings with four strikeouts.
