HAYS – When Great Bend’s DeShawna Bryant drilled a seventh-inning home run, she ignited the Panthers’ best softball of the season. A 6-run inning sparked a 9-6 victory and the Panthers completed a sweep of Hays Thomas More Prep with a 14-4 victory. Great Bend (10-10) is projected to play Western Athletic champion Hays High (13-4) at next week's 5A softball regional.
PANTHERS 9, MONARCHS 6 (G1) – The Monarchs (13-7) led 6-4 after six innings. Katherine Mazouch drove in two runs and Denver Ringo, Kamryn Koelsch, Ava Kaiser delivered RBIs singles in a 6-run seventh inning.
Rylee Prilling, Kaiser and Paige Thexton drove home runs in a 3-run fourth inning. Koelsch’s bunt single sparked the rally.
Left fielder Kaiser delivered the game’s best defensive play with a dazzling catch and a throw for a double play on baserunner Hannah Garcia.
The Monarchs’ Brooke Koeningsman drilled a 2-run homer. Sophie Allen singled home two runs.
PANTHERS 14, MONARCHS 3 (G2) – Great Bend kept the bats rolling with six extra-base hits. Thexton (3-5) struck out eight batters, homered and drove home two runs with two hits.
Mazouch drove home two runs. McCauley and Ringo drove home runs. The Panthers scored nine unearned runs off six Monarch errors.
Monarch Koeningsman drilled a 2-run homer for the second consecutive game. The Panthers scored 23 runs to tag TMP pitcher Madison Augustine (10-5) with two losses.
