Buffaloes edge Panthers again

GARDEN CITY — Great Bend pitcher Jordan Turner threw a brilliant opener against rival Garden City. The Panthers delivered clutch hit after clutch hit in the nightcap.

But the Buffaloes broke the Panthers' hearts for the third consecutive time with a hard-fought 2-1 and 10-9 Western Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep.

BUFFALOES 2, PANTHERS 1 (G1, 9 innings) — Turner was rock solid for 81/3 innings, yielding no earned runs. But Garden City's best hitter Brie Manwarren singled home Abby Parr for the game-winning ninth-inning run. The Buffaloes edged the Panthers in the ninth inning for the second consecutive time.

Garden City pitcher Manwarren matched Turner with 17 strikeouts. She struck out at least two batters in seven innings.

The Buffaloes led 1-0 when Manwarren singled home Angie Serrano for an unearned third-inning run. Great Bend's Grace Rowland scored on an error after reaching on an and advancing on a stolen base and passed ball.

Unruh singled to lead off the ninth. But Manwarren retired Hailee Post, Paige Thexton and Brenna Bownes to strand the go-ahead runner at second base.

BUFFALOES 10, PANTHERS 9 (G2) — The Panthers elected to pitch to Garden City's best hitter with first base open. Manwarren delivered the game-winning single to score Jesykah Foster with the game-winning RBI for the second consecutive game.

Great Bend (5-11, 2-6 WAC) lost three straight games to the Buffaloes (11-1, 5-1 WAC) in the last inning.

Pamela Bujanda scored three runs with three hits. Brenna Bownes doubled twice and scored two runs. Hailee Post and Grace Rowland each drove in two runs.

Manwarren hit a two-run double and Jesykah Foster and McGraw added RBIs for a 5-0 lead. Post's two-run double scored Laura Daniel and Unruh in a two-run third inning. Angel Serrano's two-run double made it 7-2.

Jordan Turner hit an RBI double in a two-run fourth inning. Bownes and Bujanda hit RBI doubles and Rowland's fifth-inning bunt tied it 7-7. McGraw's double and Angel Serrano's fly ball gave the Buffaloes a 9-7 lead.

Rowland's single scored Bownes and Bujanda scored on a seventh-inning wild pitch for a 9-9 tie.
