Cardinal baseball splits with Halstead

HOISINGTON – The Hoisington Cardinals (4-5) rallied for two runs to surprise Halstead 3-2 to gain a split of Friday’s Central Kansas League baseball doubleheader. Layton Haxton scored the game-winner on a groundball by M.J. Aylward.

HALSTEAD 11, CARDINALS 5 (G1) – Halstead’s Carter Hiebert and Kaden Lopez each drove home three runs. Kaleb Wise, Chandler Drake and Adler Dawson each drove home two runs.

Hoisington’s Holt Hanzlick scored a fifth-inning run on a passed ball. The Cardinals scored four runs in the fifth inning. M.J. Aylward scored on an error. Tony Moore singled home Quentin Boxberger. Chase Steinert singled home Moore. Layton Haxton singled home Hanzlick for an 11-5 final

CARDINALS 3, HALSTEAD 2 (G2) – Hoisington rallied for a 3-2 eight-inning victory as Chase Steinert and Layton Haxton singled and Cole Steinert walked to load the bases. Alex Elmore’s single scored Chase Steinert, but Cole Steinert was thrown out at home. Aylward delivered a groundball that scored Haxton with the walk-off game-winning run.

Hoisington pitcher Holt Hanzlick struck out 11 batters.

Halstead’s Ivan Gutierrez scored the first run on a stolen base. Tony Moore’s single scored Aylward for a 1-1 tie after five innings. Gutierrez scored on an eighth-inning error for a 2-1 lead.
