LAKE BARTON —Hoisington Cardinal runner Kynlie Crowdis was the happiest girl in Barton County.

One year after Macksville's Madison Butler beat her at Lake Barton, Crowdis sprinted past Butler in the final mile. Butler's pace slowed unexpectedly in the final mile after leading the first two miles.

"I was surprised more by the way I won," Crowdis said. "I improved my time and won my first varsity cross country race on my home turf. That's pretty cool. Madison beat me here last year. I figured she'd take off and maybe I could track her down in the third mile. It was different than I envisioned. It was tough. But we've been training in the heat."
