The Golden Belt Swim Squad opened its season by winning its home meet at the Barton Community College pool on Saturday.
Golden Belt claimed first place out of the six-team field with 879 points, beating second-place Guymon Swim Club by 344 points.
Golden Belt head coach Steve Beaumont said that the numbers can be a little misleading this early in the season.
“Our numbers are good,” Beaumont said. “Some of the other teams’ numbers are down, and it’s hard to tell this early in the season. Guymon and Dumas probably didn’t bring their whole squad. It’s a long trip for them.
“Numberwise this early in the season, it’s a little hard to say.”
The Golden Belt eight-and-under girls were able to pick up first, second and third in the 25-yard freestyle event with Rachel Panzer taking first, touching in at 20.59 seconds.
Zoe Jerke took second with a time of 22.10 and McKenna Cape finished in third place with a time of 23.59.
“For the first meet of the season, it is a really good meet to have,” Beaumont said. “It’s pretty low key for our kids, especially for our new kids. It’s good to bring in the new kids, and let them just see how a swim meet works. The fact that it is not a real big meet pays off in a lot of ways, but the new kids, it definitely helps them get used to what a swim meet is like.”
The eight-and-under boys took first and second in the 25 freestyle. Cal Dunekack finished in first place at 19.53 and Isaac Mountain finished in second with a time of 20.59.
Matt Huslig broke a pool record with a time of 49.91 in the eight-and-under 50 freestyle.
“It is a little more laid back,” Beaumont said. “Our kids haven’t been in the water a whole lot yet. For the new kids, a lot of them were easing their way into it. It is a really good way to ease into the season.”
Isaac Panzer took first place in the 50 freestyle, the 50 backstroke and the 50 butterfly for the nine- and 10-year-olds, finishing with a time of 31.78 in the free, 41.41 in the backstroke and 35.27 in the fly.
Panzer also broke a pool record in the 100 freestyle, finishing with a time of 1:15.65.
“I thought our morning group of kids, nine- and 10-year-olds and our eight-and-under kids, swam real well today,” Beaumont said. “We only had a couple disqualifications today and that’s a lot of races out of those kids. We had some new kids who were swimming for the first time and some moving up into new age groups swimming races they don’t normally swim.
“Considering all, I think our little kids did really well.”
Allison Damm was among those competing in the 15-and-over division. She broke two pool records, finishing in first place in the 200 and 500 freestyle.
Damm turned in a time of 2:19.65 in the 200 free and 6:30.52 in the 500 free.
“For the first meet, we saw some good improvements,” Beaumont said. “Our kids haven’t been in the water a whole lot. We weren’t expecting great time improvements, but I think we swam pretty solid. I think we still have a lot of work to do, but it is still early in the season. We’ve got plenty of time to work on those things.
“We swam solid all the way down from our high school kids to our six-year-olds. It was a good day for us, and it was a good start.”
