Red Demons down Panthers
BY JIM MISUNAS
Once the Dodge City Red Demons started drilling 3-pointers, Great Bend’s girls had little chance of pulling a basketball upset.
Dodge City converted eight 3-pointers to roll past the Panthers 69-27 in Friday’s Western Athletic Conference basketball game.
Dodge City’s Kisa Unruh scored 18 points with 4-of-4 3-pointers. Camree Johnson added 14 points and 13 rebounds. Dodge City dominated the shorter Panther 37-22. The Red Demons outscored the Panthers 24-3 on 3-pointers.
Panther Candice Smith scored the game’s first basket for a 2-0 lead. Unruh and Johnson each scored seven first-quarter points for a 21-4 lead behind a trio of 3-pointers.
Smith added a second-rebound basket in the second period. That was the only two baskets until halftime for the Panthers, who combined to miss a combined 25 field goal attempts to trail 34-9 at halftime.
“When they’re shooting the 3-pointer, there’s not a lot you can do,” said Great Bend coach Carrie Minton. “They’re a hard team to defend. They’re a physical team.”
Sparkplug Sydney Unruh scored all four second-half field goals for a team high 15 points. Other than Unruh and Smith, the Panthers made all 18 field goals.
Great Bend (1-18, 0-7 WAC) dropped its 15th consecutive basketball game. It’s been 73 days since the Panthers beat Junction City 60-25 Dec. 4 at Great Bend.
