Panther girls feature state experience

Great Bend girls wrestling coach Jeremy Foster's Panthers are ranked sixth in the preseason team rankings after earning 10 state qualifiers last year.

"Our team goals are to compete for the WAC title and a state trophy," Foster said. "Our keys to success are to improve and expand our program."

Great Bend’s No. 2 ranked Camdyn Post (34-9) showed tenacity against Newton’s Brookelyn Treaster in a 5-0 setback in last year's 105-pound 5A state championship match. In preseason, Treaster is ranked first and Post is ranked second.

“My goal is to be wrestling for a state championship,” Post said. “It’s tons of work to reach a state championship match."

Foster said, "Camdyn is an amazing wrestler who works hard to improve her abilities. She is looking to improve with a return trip to the state finals and finish with a state championship.

Great Bend's No. 2 state-ranked Sophia Bauer (24-21, 100) placed sixth with a 20-9 loss to Goddard Eisenhower’s Sadie Kuehn. No. 3 state-ranked Brooklynn Kelly (38-16, 125) finished sixth with an 11-4 loss to KC Washington’s Reddi Johnson.

"Sophia Bauer and Brooklynn Kelly are looking to improve their state finishes from last year," Foster said.

Kayle Baldwin (17-14, 115); Shatarah Newton (12-22, 140), Kiera Levya (17-22, 1105) and Madison Ketch (10-21, 120) also qualified for state in 2024.

Micah Ellegood (24-17, 130) is another returning state qualifier.

"Micah Ellegood is a great wrestler who had a disappointing season-ending injury at regionals," Foster said. "She's working to get back to state."

Preseason No. 4 state-ranked Hayden Liles (138), No. 3 ranked Triston Tomlinson (157) and No. 4 ranked Hayden Kelly (165) all lost quarterfinal matches last year.  Three-time qualifier Tomlinson has placed third and sixth at 5A state.

"We're shooting to have eight or nine guys competitive for a state berth," said Great Bend boys wrestling coach Rex Kern. "We'll get new state qualifiers this year."

Great Bend’s boys have captured 16 individual state wrestling championships. Four-time state qualifier Jace Schartz nearly earned No. 17, but lost 4-1 to Salina Central’s Abram Owings at 165 pounds last year.

"We've got good numbers to be productive with our practice partners," said Kern. "Our middle to light weights are competitive because they're pushing each other."
