Great Bend baseball loses two games

MCPHERSON — Andover held off Great Bend's rally for a 7-5 baseball victory to start the Panthers' season 0-2. McPherson dropped the Panthers 8-4 in Tuesday's baseball opener.

The Panthers return home Thursday to play Wichita Independent.

MCPHERSON 8, GREAT BEND 4 (G1) — McPherson scored six first-inning runs off starter Collin Hall and rolled to an 8-4 opening baseball victory over the Panthers.

The Bullpups parlayed two walks, two errors and a hit batter into four unearned runs. Spencer Whitfield forced home a run on a bases-loaded walk. Gabe Hoover and Honestee Whittker scored on an infield error. Kourtney Craig and Chandler Wiard delivered RBI singles. Craig scored on an error for a 6-0 lead.

Great Bend’s Joey Soupiset drilled a second-inning home run. A potential rally ended when Hall was picked off second base.

Townshend Kurth’s sacrifice fly scored Alex Schremmer in the third inning.

McPherson’s Honestee Whittker delivered a two-run single to score Aiden Hoover and Jakob File for two unearned fourth-inning runs for an 8-2 lead.

Chance Perry’s groundball that was mishandled brought home Schremmer in the fifth inning. Reliever Tanner Cheatham retired Eddie Bujanda and Soupiset to work out of further trouble.

Jesus Bujanda’s bases-loaded walk forced home Kurth in the seventh inning. Reliever Jakob File left the bases loaded by retiring Riley Smith and Hall to end the ballgame.  

ANDOVER 7, GREAT BEND 5 (G2) — Andover scored five unearned runs as the Trojans took advantage of four Panther errors and five walks.

Back-to-back errors to three first-inning runs. Jackson Nicklaus and Eli Fahnestock scored on an error. Preston Drake single scored Jaxson Hurt off starter Eddie Bujanda. 

Fahnestock's double scored Trey Conrad for a 4-0 lead after a walk, error and sacrifice bunt. 

Great Bend's Kurth walked, stole second and third base and scored on a third-inning wild pitch. Sterling Pierce scored on a fourth-inning double play ball by shortstop Alex Schremmer for a 5-1 lead. 

Riley Smith walked and scored on Calan Haberman's fourth-inning groundball for a 5-2 score. Andover's Hurt scored on an error and Pierce scored on a passed ball for a 7-2 lead after five inning.

Haberman scored on a bases-loaded walk and Eddie Bujanda's single scored Kurth and Chance Perry in a three-run sixth inning. Schremmer was thrown out at third base to end the rally.
