WICHITA — Wichita Baty downed the Great Bend Bombers 7-3 to avenge an earlier setback in Sunday's Big Fire Baseball Tournament. The Bombers ended with a 3-2 tournament record. Bombers starter Owen Kaiser yielded five earned runs.
The Bombers scored runs in the first, third and sixth innings. Campbell Coleman doubled home Carson Umphres. Umphres scored on Carter Graham's groundout. Umphres singled home Hunter Herrman.
Wichita Baty's Lakin Franz, Owen Schmidt, Josiah Schmidt, Braden Roberts and Jaiden Diasio drove home runs.
BOMBERS 2, SAINTS 0 — Great Bend Bombers pitcher Cooper Johnson threw a 2-hit shutout with five strikeouts to shut down the Saints 2-0 Sunday.
Haven's Ty Lastinger singled and doubled off Johnson.
Umphres singled home Lane French after a third-inning triple. Umphres advanced on a balk and scored on a wild pitch. Tony Moore and Umphres each delivered three hits.
The Bombers had five baserunners thrown out on the bases. Kaiser and French hit into groundball double plays. Josh Burdick was thrown out at home, Moore at third base and Umphres was picked off at first base.
BOMBERS 3, WICHITA BATY 1 — Hunter Herrman pitched five innings and Brady Hope earned a save to spark the Great Bend Bombers past Wichita Baty 3-1.
Herrman struck out five batters in a solid 70-pitch performance. Hope stranded two sixth-inning baserunners when he retired Roberts on a bunt and struck out Jon Gould and Max Maes.
French walked and scored on Coleman's first-inning groundout. Coleman singled and Graham walked and scored on Carson Shaver's fourth-inning double.
Baty's Diasio singled in Roberts in the second inning.
BOMBERS 10, WICHITA WARRIORS 2 — All-state 5A pitcher Umphres struck out nine batters to spark the Bombers to a 10-2 victory.
Ellinwood's Campbell Coleman drove in three runs with a pair of singles. Coleman drove in Moore and Umphres scored on a groundout for a 2-0 lead. Koehn Ribordy doubled home Trace Jacobs in the fourth inning.
Coleman's single scored Moore and Umphres in the fifth inning. Brady Hope and Moore delivered sacrifice flies and Umphres doubled in Cameron Eastman in the sixth inning. Johnson and Jacobs scored on seventh-inning groundouts for a 10-2 score.
WICHITA HOOVER 5, BOMBERS 4 — The Great Bend Bombers challenged Wichita Hoover, but lost 5-4.
The Bombers missed two golden opportunities in the late innings. Macksville's Kendall Grippin retired Johnson on a line drive to second baseman Hunter Strunk to leave the bases loaded in the fifth inning.
Hoover reliever Parker Meirowsky retired Brady Hope on a pop fly to leave Kaiser stranded at third base to end the ballgame.
Hoover led 2-0 when Scott Hadley scored on a groundout and Meirowsky stole home on a first-inning double steal.
The Bombers responded with a 3-run first inning. Umphres tripled home Hope. Umphres was forced home on Moore's hit-by-pitch. Graham scored on a balk.
Hoover's Cooper Shaw scored on a third-inning double play. turned by shortstop Hope and second baseman Johnson Jaden Guerrero singled in Meirowsky and Guerrero scored on a fifth-inning error for a 5-3 lead.
Bomber Herrman scored on Meirowsky's sixth-inning balk for a 5-4 score.
Hoisington's Moore (0-1) was tagged with the hard-luck loss, yielding one earned run in five innings.
