Great Bend Bombers wind down summer season

PARKVILLE, MO. – The Great Bend Bombers 16-andunder baseball team finished 1-1-1 in the Midwest Premier Super to wind down their summer season. The Bombers lost 9-3 to the No. 1 seed Paducah, Ky. and defeated Westfield, Ind. 8-6.

The Bombers (21-10-3) finished with a .305 batting average, .419 on-base % and a .412 slugging %. Pitchers had 160 strikeouts in 207 innings, and a 4.00 ERA.

PADUCAH, KY . 9, BOMBERS 3 – Bomber Hunter Herrman drove home two runs and Campbell Coleman singled home a run against the No. 1 seed.

BOMBERS 8, WESTFIELD, IND. 6 – Bomber Carson Umphres scored three runs and drove home three runs with two hits. Coleman drove home three runs. Owen Kaiser also drove home a run. Owen Kaiser (5-1) earned the victory.

Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, Texas, Wisconsin, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota and Oklahoma were represented in the 57-team tournament. The top 12 teams qualified for bracket play.

“The guys played good baseball against top-notch pitchers who threw anywhere from 86 to 90 mph," said coach Chris Umphres. "Our guys said it was fun playing in the best big-time tournament we’ve competed in. We represented ourselves very well. The teams we played kept asking how a small-town could compete."

The Bombers beat a quality Indiana team.

"We beat the Westfield, Ind. Bulls program that the No. 1 high school draft pick pitcher/outfielder Max Clark previously played on," Umphres said. "Every game was seen by as many as 15 college recruiters. We competed at a high level."
