SALINA — The Great Bend Chiefs treated the Salina Falcons like the well-worn dirt at historic Dean Evans Field. The Chiefs stormed past the Falcons 10-3 and 6-2 to send the Falcons out on a sour note at the final games before artificial turf is installed.
The Chiefs (10-8) are idle until July 11 against Smith Center.
CHIEFS 10, FALCONS 3 (G1) — The Chiefs roughed up four pitchers for 10 runs and nine hits. The Chiefs drew eight walks and had two batters hit by pitches for 10 baserunners. The Falcons contributed a trio of errors. Chayse Gruber delivered three hits and Layton Holden rapped out two hits.
Erin Vargas drove home Mathew Moeder to ignite a four-run second inning. Joseph Moeder scored on an error. Holden Layton singled home Vargas and Gavin Haberman also scored a run for a 4-0 lead. Brad Beck's groundout scored Gruber for a 5-3 score.
Kurth's double scored Holden and Kurth scored on a wild pitch for a 7-3 lead after five innings. Stefan Spray singled home Jade Poe to ignite a three-run sixth inning. Gruber scored on Mathew Moeder's sacrifice fly. Beck scored on an error for a 10-3 victory.
CHIEFS 6, FALCONS 2 (G2) — Colin Hall and Poe each drove in two runs to spark another easy victory. Hall's single drove home Kurth and Poe singled home Paco Hernandez in the first inning. Spray's single scored Hall for a 3-0 lead.
Hall's single scored Holden and Poe singled home Hernandez for a 5-0 lead after three innings. Gavin Haberman scored on a fifth-inning error.
Salina's Cooper Thompson’ delivered an RBI single and a wild potch scored a second run.
