Great Bend Chiefs make semifinals

TOPEKA — The Great Bend Chiefs stayed hot with two wins Saturday to qualify for Sunday's semifinals at the Kansas Senators' Legion Baseball Tournament.

The Chiefs (13-5) beat Ottawa 3-2 and the Kansas Senators 12-6.

CHIEFS 12, KANSAS SENATORS 6 (G1) — The Chiefs rallied from a 5-0 deficit as Calan Haberman drove home three runs and Townshend Kurth and Carson Smith each drove in two runs. Layton Holden worked six innings to earn the victory at the Kansas Senators Tournament.

Logan Brown and Tyler Dresisigaker hit RBI singles. Jackson Soza scored on a bases-loaded hit batter and Brown and Brian Lunceford scored on bases-loaded walks for a 5-0 lead. 

Alex Schremmer scored on Riley Smith's first-inning sacrifice fly. The Chiefs scored five third-inning runs. Kurth doubled home Nahum Olivas and Schremmer. Kurth scored on a passed ball. Joey Soupiset singled home Jayce Kohls. Carson Smith scored on a passed ball for a 6-5 lead. Haberman singled home Soupiset for a 7-5 lead.

The Chiefs turned a nifty fourth-inning double play on Lunceford's strikeout and Soza was thrown out at home on the relay from first baseman Kurth. Colin Hall singled home Kurth to ignite a four-run fourth inning. Riley Smith singled home Carson Smith. Haberman's single scored Kohls and Riley Smith for an 11-5 lead. Schremmer scored a fifth-inning run on a double play.

Soza scored the Kansas Senators' sixth run on a sixth-inning groundout. 

CHIEFS 3, OTTAWA 2 (G2)  Pitcher Alex Schremmer preserved the win by recording the final three outs. He drove in two runs and scored the game-winning run. Schremmer scored the game-winning run after a seventh-inning walk, two steals and an error by the Ottawa catcher. Colin Hall pitched 12/3 innings and Carson Smith worked 41/3 innings.

Schremmer singled home Calan Haberman and Jayce Kohls in the second inning. Haberman singled and Kohls walked.
