HOISINGTON – After an inspired effort, it was no surprise when the Hoisington Cardinals girls played flat in a 56-32 loss to 5A Hays High Tuesday.
The Indians played without regulars Carly Lang, Maia Lummus, and Claire Humphrey who sat out for a violation of team rules. Hays looked to Ginny Ke, Reanna Green, and Caroline Robben to fill the void of their starters.
Aleyia Ruder led Hays with 15 points and Ginny Ke added 13 points. Keeley Wolf scored 10 points and Jaci Guthrie added eight points for the Cardinals.
“We were extremely flat to start the gam,” said Hoisington coach Mandy Mason. “We didn’t have a very good practice (yesterday) and it carried over. We had too many turnovers, and I give Hays credit. Their defense really bothered us and it really took us out of our offensive scheme.”
After trailing 10-1, Macy Hanzlick scored the first bucket for the Cardinals. Jaci Guthrie broke another scoring drought in the second period. Addy Mason and Jaci Guthrie converted a three point play to cut the Cardinal deficit to 9. Foul trouble and turnovers would catch up to Hoisington.
Hoisington kept the comeback alive with buckets from Brielle Romeiser and Keely Wolf, but Hoisington would find responses from Ruder and Reanna Green to keep the Cardinals from gaining ground on the Indians.
Hoisington is 3-2.
