HAYS – The Hays High Indians reloaded in a hurry.

After graduating a senior-laden team, the Indians rolled past Great Bend 74-58 in Thursday’s Hays City Shootout. Hays converted 10 3-pointers and dominated inside with its frontline measuring 6-6, 6-7 and 6-9.

The Panthers committed 23 urnovers, which fueled an effective Indian fast break.

It was’t the type of opener that Great Bend coach Tim Brooks expected in his third opener with the Panthers.

“I thought we’d be better handling the basketball,” Brooks said. “We struggled with turnovers.”

Great Bend (0-1) earns a quick turnaround at 3:30 p.m. Friday against Millwood (Oklahoma City) Okla. The Indians (1-0) play Manhattan at 7 p.m. Friday.

For several minutes at a time, the Panthers showed some spark, turning the Indians over with some pressure schemes. Point guard Sam Ryan led the way with 10 points. Alex Schremmer scored nine points on 3-of-12 shooting. Alex Olivas added eight points.

“We tried a couple presses, but we haven’t had too much time to work on them,” said Great Bend coach Tim Brooks.

The Panthers trailed 35-27 at halftime, thanks to nine free throws.

“We fouled a lot the first half and bailed them out,” Brooks said. “That built their lead. We didn’t see the man and ball and got back-doored.”

The Panthers converted 8 of 23 shots in 3-pointers and made 21 of 58 field goals. The Indians’ height was too much inside.

“We didn’t shoot it good, but a lot of that has to do with Hays High’s length,” Brooks said. “When we practice, we can’t simulate that type of height so we’rre trying open shots.”

Hays High’s stylish Tradgon McCrae led the way with 18 points and Braiden Meyers (12) and T.J. Nunnery (10) scored in double figures. The Indians converted 10 3-point goals and worked inside effectively with 6-9 Dylan Ruder, 6-7 Cade Swayne and 6-6 Trey Adams, who converted a slam dunk.

The best news is 12 Panthers scored and Brooks liked the fact everyone contributed in a positive way. With three games in three days, Brooks said everyone will play.
