Hays High scored three first-half goals and downed Great Bend 5-0 in Tuesday's Western Athletic Conference soccer showdown at Cavanaugh Field.
The Indians opened the scoring when Henry Speno set up the first score (11:00) on Mason Scheicher's goal. After the Indians missed several other chances, Erik Cisneros dished to Edwin Muller (20:15) for a 2-0 lead. Izaac Fox fired home a shot from 30 yards on a restart for a 3-0 halftime lead.
Great Bend nearly scored a late-second goal, but a rocket shot by Ricardo Cruz that went into the net was ruled just a split second after the halftime buzzer sounded. Diego Pasos missed the Panthers' other quality scoring opportunity.
Muller added a second goal and Cooper Johnson converted a second-half goal for a 5-0 victory.
The Indians controlled time of possession and dictated the tempo with crisp passing that kept the Panthers on their heels.
