Hays' perfect game sparks sweep

HAYS – Hays Eagle pitcher Carson Jacobs struck out seven batters in a perfect game five-inning shutout to overpower the Great Bend Chiefs 10-0 in Friday's baseball nightcap. Hays won the opener 8-2 to sweep the doubleheader.  

The Great Bend Chiefs (1-3) play Larned at home Tuesday.

HAYS EAGLES 8, CHIEFS 2 (G1) – Shortstop Sage Koelsch and second baseman Chayse Gruber delivered the Chiefs' highlights by turning a pair of inning-ending double plays. Catcher Colin Hall continued to shine by throwing out Dominic Bainter at second base.

Hays' Brock Lummus doubled twice and drove home two runs to lead a 10-hit attack. Jacobs drove in three runs. Lummus, Jacobs and Josh Haynes delivered RBIs in a three-run first inning off starter Layton Holden.

The Chiefs' Paco Hernandez scored on a wild pitch and Koelsch singled home Colin Hall for a 3-2 score after two innings off pitcher Colby Dreiling.

Lummus and Haynes scored on third-inning errors. Lummus drilled an RBI double and Jacobs' single drove home Colby Dreiling and Lummus in a three-run fourth inning for an 8-2 lead.

HAYS EAGLES 10, CHIEFS 0 (G2) – The Chiefs hit two balls to the outfield on fly-ball outs by Jade Poe and Koelsch against the 6-foot-7 Jacobs from Thomas More Prep. Chiefs' pitcher Colin Hall worked into the fourth inning when the Eagles scored six runs for a run-rule victory.

Jack Fields doubled home Remington Cox and Fields scored on a second-inning error. Josh Haynes doubled home Jacobs and Bainter singled home Haynes for a 4-0 lead.

Jacobs singled home Lummus to ignite a six-run fourth inning. Jacobs scored on a bases-loaded walk. Dalton Dale singled home Haynes. Cox scored on Fields' groundout. Bainter and Dale scored on a Chiefs' error for a 10-0 lead.
