PAWNEE HEIGHTS 52, WESTERN PLAINS 6

ROZEL – The Pawnee Heights Tigers spread the offensive wealth in a 52-6 victory over western Plains in 6-man football.  Six Tigers contributed to the scoring as head coach Ryan Klenke celebrated his first victory at his alma mater.

Clayton Hammeke rushed for three touchdowns. The Tigers (1-1) saw Logan Enabit pass for two scores and a 1-point conversion. Alexis Ibarra, Cody Holste and Brady Carlson contributed rushing touchdowns. Clayton Hammeke and Roberto Cordero caught scoring passes from Enabit.

Adding conversions runs or passes were Ibarra, Holste, Carlson and Thomas Boese.


ELLINWOOD 47, HERINGTON 0

ELLINWOOD – Ellinwood quarterback Landon Simpson, Drake Hosman and Cason Merritt each scored a pair of touchdowns as the Eagles roared past Herington 47-0 in Friday’s non-league football game.

Simpson scored on a 5-yard run and 60-yard punt return and recovered a fumble for a 1-yard scoring drive. Ty Hammeke caught a 25-yard scoring pass from Simpson. Hosman scored on 4- and 6-yard runs. Merritt scored on 1- and 3-yard dashes.

Ellinwood (2-0) starts a football season with shutouts for the first time since 1978 (Lyons 9-0, Ellsworth 49-0). The Eagles intercepted three passes and recovered three fumbles.

The Railers' offense rolled to the 11-yard line, but fumbled the football away at the Eagle 11 yard line. Merritt punched in the first touchdown. After the Railers would turn the ball over on downs, Ellinwood's Hosman scored after the Eagles gained a short field.

Merritt added his second touchdown after Simpson's fumble recovery.

Simpson's quarterback keeper stretched out the lead, and Hosman added another score. Simpson converted a 60 yard punt return. He intercepted a Railer pass in the final minute, taking it back to the house before being called back on an Ellinwood penalty. 

Hammeke caught a 25 yard pass and dived into the endzone as time expired. Ellinwood played stout defense in the second half, keeping the Railers off the board for the shutout win.

The Eagles travel to Johnson Stanton County Sept. 20.

MACKSVILLE 20, KINSLEY 16

MACKSVILLE – Macksville quarterback Kendall Grippin pulled off a clutch scoring drive with a 5-yard touchdown run with two seconds left to shock Kinsley 20-16 in an 8-man Central Prairie League showdown. Grippin passed for 114 yards and rushed for 31 yards.

The Mustangs (1-1) had to drive the field after Kinsley’s Josh Stucky converted a touchdown run and added a 2-point conversion for a 16-14 lead.

The Mustangs responded and Gavin Rose caught a clutch 38-yard reception that gave Macksville a first down at the Kinsley 6-yard line. Orion Guevara gained 120 yards offense and scored Macksville’s first two touchdowns.

Rose contributed 13 tackles with an interception. James Granger had 13 tackles. Devin Murrow contributed 12 stops.

HESSTON 28, HOISINGTON 24 

HOISINGTON – Hesston quarterback Jarick Humphries directed a game-winning 80-yard drive capped by Tim Rhodes 3-yard touchdown with 16 seconds left for a 28-24 Central Kansas League football victory over Hoisington.

Hoisington's Taylen Morales converted a 3-yard touchdown run for a 24-21 lead in the fourth quarter. But the Swathers (2-0) had the final offensive answer.

Humphreys threw for 222 yards. Asher Deutschendorf caught a 77-yard scoring strike for a 21-16 Hesston halftime lead.

Cardinal Teron Kraft scored on a 1-yard run and Taylen Morales added a 43-yard scoring dash and a field goal for a 16-14 lead. 

Hoisington's Mason Martin intercepted two passes and Brady Reif recovered a fumble.

"It's no fun to lose, but everything is still in front of us," said Hoisington coach Zach Baird. "We'll learn from this. Our guys bounced back really well after week one. We had guys step up tonight." 

Hoisington (0-2) starts with two losses for the first time since 2013.

VICTORIA – Central Plains scored a pair of first-half touchdowns, but Victoria’s ground game pounded out a 62-12 Central Prairie League 8-man football victory.

Brodie Crites completed a 38-yard pass to Peyton Dody and Richard Stroud scored on a 1-yard run.

Victoria’s Matt Pfeifer scored a trio of touchdowns on runs of 1, 11 and 65 yards to break open the ballgame. Will Schmeidler opened the game with a 70-yard kickoff return. Weston Scherrer added a 75-yard touchdown run for Victoria (2-0).

PRETTY PRAIRIE – Stafford's Cody Knoche rushed for three touchdowns as the Bulldogs downed Pretty Prairie 30-14 in Fridays 8-man football game. Knoche scored on 14, 40 and 43-yard runs. Landon Baird caught a 6-yard scoring pass from Jacob Simmons.

The Trojans (1-1) rushed for 147 yards and Simmons passed for 67 yards.

Pretty Prairie quarterback Emmett Harbaugh rushed for a 13-yard touchdown and completed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Weston Smyth.

ST. JOHN — St. John quarterback Braxton Alpers rushed for a school record seven touchdowns in a wild 54-40 Central Prairie League football shootout over Ness City. Braxton Alpers gained 293 yards and scored six rushing touchdowns. Braxton Alpers also scored on a 29-yard punt return.

Jace Reyes rushed for 93 yards and scored a touchdown.

KIOWA — Otis-Bison's Kelson Juno caught three touchdown passes from Jake Hoopingarner in a 39-17 setback to South Barber in 8-man football Friday. The Cougars drop to 1-1.

Hoopingarner rushed for 45 yards and passed for 245 yards. Juno had six catches for 121 yards.

Freshman Aiden Ochs/Lohrey contributed 10 tackles and Louis McVey had eight tackles.
