SYLVAN GROVE — Underdog Larned kept rallying, but the Indians fell short in a hard-fought 6-4 loss to Sylvan in Monday's 3A Hays softball regional.

The Indians (7-12) had sixth- and seventh-inning rallies stopped when Shaylee Martin was thrown out in back-to-back innings.

Kylie Rahmeier's single drove home Brecken Obermueller for a 1-0 Mustang lead. Nikki Taylor's sacrifice fly brought home Lynzi Myrick for a 1-1 tie.

Sylvan's Taegan Walter's single drove home Mikayla Breneman for a 2-1 third-inning lead. But Larned's defense saved the day when catcher Martin tagged out Dharma Couse and relayed to Baylea Perez for a double play on Dawson O'Bannon.

The Mustangs scored four fourth-inning runs. Hannah Wolting scored on a passed ball. Breneman's single drove in Rahmeier. Couse drilled a two-run homer off pitcher Nikki Taylor for a 6-1 lead.

The Indians (7-12) kept battling off reliever Couse.

Martin reached third base in the sixth inning, but was tagged out at home with no out with the Indians down 6-1. Julia Tapia's single drove in Kendra Grandy for a 6-2 score.

A trio of walks led to Perez scoring on Martin's fielder's choice and Myrick scoring on Kendra Grandy's base hit. But Martin was thrown out at third base to end the game.
