Hoisington wrestler earns national trophies

Hoisington Cardinal two-time state wrestling champion Wyatt Pedigo displays a Rocky Mountain National Championship trophy for the 195-pound division.

DENVER, COLO. — Hoisington High’s Wyatt Pedigo was named Outstanding Wrestler after winning five matches to capture the 195-pound division at the Rocky Mountain Nationals Tournament Saturday. Pedigo is a two-time Kansas high school state wrestling champion who earned four pins.

The Team Kansas is composed of the state’s best high school wrestlers with two per weight entered. 

Pedigo edged 6A state champion Preston Williams 12-11 in overtime. 

USAWKS STATE FOLKSTYLE — Hoisington Junior Cardinal wrestler Riley Philbern (285) won the USAWKS 2019 State Folkstyle Championship at Topeka. Philbern pinned Kansas City Turner’s Joseph Castle in 4:18 in the championship match.

Joshua Ball (182) placed third with a 1-0 victory over Chanute’s Brayden Dillow. Quentin Boxberger and Nicolas Rubio also competed at the state tournament.

“Hoisington had several young kids place at the state meet other than our high school kids,” said Hoisington coach Dan Schmidt.
