HOISINGTON GIRLS 49, SMOKY VALLEY 46

LINDSBORG — Hoisington's Ellie Crawford knew it was her night to shine when she converted a half-court shot in a 49-46 Central Kansas League basketball victory over Smoky Valley. Crawford scored a career high 23 points and drilled a half-court shot for a 22-19 halftime lead.

"That was a great way to go into halftime," said Hoisington coach Trina Lutters. "Ellie enjoyed a huge game. Tonight was good for us."

The Cardinals used full-court pressure and forced seven fourth-quarter turnovers to build a 45-37 lead. Mollie Steiner's 3-pointer gave the Cardinals a 37-35 lead. Crawford made two consecutive baskets and Steiner and Mallory Mooney scored for a 45-37 lead. Crawford scored the Cardinals final two baskets. Hoisington (6-0) outscored the Vikings 15-0 on 3-pointers and forced 20 Viking turnovers.

Smoky Valley (2-4) rallied behind 19 points by Adrian Hazelwood and Katja Blanchat as they combined for 38 of the Vikings; 46 points. Hazelwood missed a tying 3-pointer at the final buzzer. The Vikings made 16 of 21 free throws.

"We make it exciting," Lutters said. "Mollie Steiner's 3 gave us momentum."

DODGE CITY — Great Bend pitcher Carson Umphres struck out 11 batters with a 3-hit shutout to spark an 8-0 Western Athletic Conference baseball victory over Dodge City. Umphres (2-0, 0.913 ERA) has struck out 22 batters in 151/3 innings. Panther Koehn Ribordy led the offense with three hits and four runs batted home.
