SABETHA — Larned’s underdog run in the Class AA American Legion Baseball Tournament ended with an 11-3 loss to Ottawa Friday night.
Larned finishes with a 15-16 record and places fourth at state. Ottawa advanced to a elimination game against Concordia. Fort Scott is the unbeaten team.
Larned missed a golden opportunity to build a big lead when two runners were thrown out on the bases in the first inning. Larned’s first four batters reached base, but Landon Erway and Isiah Perez were thrown out on the bases.
Evan Skelton and Perez walked to start the first inning. Erway singled in Skelton for a 1-0 lead. Erway was thrown attempting to steal second base. Camryn Bryant singled, but Perez was thrown out at home.
Ottawa took full advantage of the break with six first-inning runs off losing pitcher Camryn Bryant. Dayne Jung delivered a two-run single and Grayson Plant, Blaine Ray, Alex Shipp and Conner Shipp drove in runs for 6-1 lead. Two runners were walked and two batters were hit by pitches.
Gage Skelton singled home Mason Schartz in the second inning. Trey Kraisinger reached on an error and scored on an error in the fourth inning.
Ottawa sealed the run-rule victory when Jordan Morton drove in two runs and Nathan Roth singled in a run.
