The Great Bend Recreation Commission played host to the Great Bend Junior Open Tennis Tournament on Friday at Veterans Memorial Park.
Competitors came from McPherson, Sterling, Arkansas City, Hays, Larned, Ellinwood and Great Bend.
“We had a lot of different cities represented at this tournament,” tournament coordinator Shannon Shartz said. “We had a girl come all the way from Arkansas City. There were a couple of boys from Larned. The boys 18-and-under had the biggest draw.”
Macy Moyers won the 14-and-under girls singles competition, defeating Camry Holle of McPherson 8-2.
Great Bend’s Brianna Schartz took the singles competition of the 16-and-under girls, topping Stephanie Langer, also of Great Bend, 8-6.
In the 16-and-under girls doubles competition, the team from Ellinwood comprised of Bailey Schartz and Darien Beckwith finished in first place, beating Brianna Schartz and Jami McVay 8-6.
The only boys division on Friday was the 18-and-under division.
In the singles competition, Nick Moyers of Great Bend was able to beat out Kevin Vonfeldt of Larned 8-7.
Nick Moyers also won the doubles competition with teammate Chase Buntain, defeating Hunter Wilkens and Bryce McClung of Hays, 8-4.
Placement at the open earns competitors points toward the end-of-season rankings in the USTA.
“They get to earn points to be ranked at the end of the season,” Shannon Shartz said. “How you place at tournaments over the season gets counted toward your ranking.”
