ULYSSES — The Golden Belt swim squad won the Western Kansas Swim Club title on Sunday.
Golden Belt finished with 878 points topping second-place Spearman Swim Club of Texas by 24.
Guymon, Okla., finished third with 718.
“It came down to the last two or three heats of the 400 free,” Golden Belt head coach Steve Beaumont said. “That’s about as exciting as we could get in two days of swimming.”
It’s the first time in four years that Spearman didn’t win the title.
“Spearman has a great team and has won the WKSC meet three out of the last four years,” Beaumont said. “Last year they really weren’t even challenged, so for us to come away winning that meet was awesome. Our kids have worked extremely hard, and our parents have been so supportive all summer.”
Beaumont said that Golden Belt led after the first day of swimming.
“It went back and forth between us and Spearman,” Beaumont said. “We led by 35 or 40 points heading into Sunday.
“We maintained that lead most of Sunday, but they gained a little bit in the breaststroke.”
The Western Kansas Swim Club combined meet included 12 teams — Spearman (Texas), Guymon (Okla.), Scott City, Moore County, Dodge City, Ulysses, Lakin, Garden City, Hays, Southwest Aquatics, Wichita County and Golden Belt.
Beaumont said that he was happy with every swimmer’s performance.
“The kids swam their hearts out,” Beaumont said. “They really came through in the end. We had a lot of kids swim their best times of the year. The kids turned in great results race after race.”
Golden Belt’s next meet is the state division-II meet.
“We have 17 or 18 kids who have qualified for the division-II meet,” Beaumont said. “They will represent the Western Kansas Swim Club.”
The meet starts Friday and runs through Sunday in Hutchinson.
