LYONS GIRLS 57, LARNED 31
LYONS -- After pulling within four points of Lyons in the third quarter, Larned's 8-minute dry spell led to a 57-31 Central Kansas League basketball loss to the Lyons Lions.
Lyons led 15-6 after one quarter lead and 22-14 at halftime. Larned was within four points in third quarter when the bottom fell out. The Indians committed 28 turnovers.
“I am frustrated and disappointed. We stake teams to a first quarter lead and have to play catch up," said Larned coach Jerrod Smith. " That dry spell in the third quarter killed us.”
Lyons was led by the stellar all-around play of Caitlyn Belote. The 5-10 junior scored 22 points and dominated the paint. Janessa Jaime with 9 and Lizeth Valenzuela with 7 for the Lions (7-7, 1-2 CKL).
Karley Lemuz scored nine points, Akielah Collins eight and Jaidyn Pinkston four for Larned (2-11, 0-3 CKL). The Indians play Smoky Valley Friday for Winter Homecoming.
Larned’s shooting was as cold as the outside weather in the first half ( 4 of 24) for 16%. They closed the evening 11 of 43 for 26%. Lyons made 20 of 41 for 49% and made 15 of 26 free throws.

LYONS – Two key turnovers by Larned proved decisive to the Indians’ upset bid against Lyons Tuesday.
With the game tied 33-33 at the 2-minute mark, Larned turned the ball and Lyons converted a layup and 3-point play. On the next possession, the Indians turned it over again and Lyons converted two free throws for a 38-33 lead. Lyons held on for a 42-36 hard-fought Central Kansas League basketball victory.
Dawson Stover scored 15 points and Kayston Cox added nine for Lyons (4-10, 1-2 CKL). Lyons made 10 of 24 field goals for 41%.
The Lyons Lions (4-10, 1-2) won their first Central Kansas League basketball game over Larned 42-36 with a hard-fought victory. Larned dropped to 2-11 and 0-3 in the CKL. Dawson Stover scored 15 points. Lyons made 10 of 24 field goals and 18 of 29 free throws.
Larned’s Thiago Hess scored seven points and Carson Shaver and Ian Orth added six points apiece. Brady Hope, in his first playing action, scored five. Larned (2-10, 0-3 CKL) made 14 of 35 field goals and 3 of 6 free throws.
Lyons paraded to the charity stripe 29 times, making 18. Larned converted 3 of 6 free throws. Larned made 14 field goals in the defensive slugfest, compared to 10 for Lyons.
“We were much better tonight, but we still lost," said Larned coach Luke Steinlage. "We didn’t convert in crunch time and it cost us. Getting Brady Hope back really helped settle us down. We did a good job of controlling tempo, but we just let one slip away."
Larned led 12-8 after one quarter and 31-28 after three quarters. Larned had 17 turnovers compared to Lyons’ 14.
