Larned boys, girls place sixth at Keady Classic

BY BUDDY TABLER

Special to the Tribune

LARNED – Bucklin boys jumped out to an 18-7 lead and blew by the Larned Indians 60-36 in the 5th-place game of the Keady Basketball Classic.

Bucklin outscored Larned 16-2 in the second quarter and took a commanding 34-9 halftime lead as they converted Larned turnovers into easy baskets. Meanwhile, Larned was in a cold-shooting streak as the Indians made 4 of 30 first-half shots for 13%.

“We talked before the game that we did not want to get sped up,” said Larned coach Luke Steinlage. “We played right into their hands and tried to run. That is not the way we should play. Consequently, we took a lot of shots that were sped up.”

Bucklin made nearly 50% of their first-half shots in grabbing the commanding lead.

The second half of the game was played on nearly equal terms, but the damage had been done.

Bucklin (2-2) was paced by 6-6 Jaron Lindsay with 19 points. Andrew Bowman and Lucas Kirk added 11 apiece. Bucklin made 23 of 52 shots.

Larned finished 14 of 58 from the field for 25%. Cade Colglazier (10), Carson Shaver (6) and Ty Smith (6) led the way. Larned (1-3) heads to Great Bend Tuesday.

Macksville’s full-court zone press prevented Larned from getting the ball inside to their post payers. Larned was forced into outside shots.

“We didn’t get any rhythm offensively,” said Larned coach Jerrod Smith. “We came out with no energy, and that surprised me. I thought we were ready to play, but we were not. We had too many turnovers to win.”
