MACKSVILLE 42, STAFFORD 40

MACKSVILLE — Macksville's Cleven Huggins converted a final free throw and the Mustangs edged Stafford 42-40 when Nathan Lowther's potential game-winning 3-pointer was ruled after the final buzzer in a last-second thriller.

Stafford's Ethan Hildebrand converted a free throw on an intentional foul with one second left, but Lowther's field goal came a split second after the final buzzer. 

The non-league basketball swung back-and-forth after Macksville's Simon Acosta ignited a wild second half with a 14-point third quarter. Acosta scored 18 points and Ryan Kuckelman added 10 points. Macksville scored 31 points after halftime.

Stafford (3-3) was led by Hildebrand with 12 points and Lowther added 10 points.

MACKSVILLE — Macksville's Lydia Mendez scored a career high 25 points as the Mustangs held off Stafford's girls 44-38 in Friday's non-league basketball game. Mendez converted five 3-pointers and had seven steals.

After Stafford's Emily Green scored for a 35-33 lead, Mustang Joselin Garcia scored and Mendez scored back-to-back baskets for a 39-35 lead. Green had a chance for a tying 3-point play, but was whistled for her fifth foul on a charge. 

Garcia scored Macksville's final three points to secure the hard-fought victory. Garcia grabbed 13 rebounds.

Stafford (2-4) was sparked with Emily Green with 27 points.

ELLIS — The underdog Ellinwood boys shocked No. 5 2A state-ranked Ellis 47-43  in Friday's non-league basketball game behind a trio of double-digit scorers.

Freshmen sensations Tyler Stuhlsatz scored 14 points and Britton Dutton added 12 points. Senior veteran David Hammeke added 12 points. The Eagles (5-1) outscored Ellis 6-1 on free throws and 15-12 on 3-pointers.

Ellis (5-1) was paced by Zach Eck with 19 points.

ELLIS — Ellis outscored Ellinwood 11-1 in the final three minute to escape with a 45-40 non-league basketball victory. Ellinwood (4-2) led 38-34, but committed five turnovers in six possessions.

Railroader Grace Eck hit a 3-pointer and Rylee Werth hit two free throws for a 39-39 tie after Ashtin Klepper's free throw. Ellis' Abigail North converted a rebound basket and Emily Eck converted a layup off a steal for a 43-39 lead.

Ellinwood;'s Mary Dimitt scored 10 points and Mya Maxwell added seven points. Ellis' Grace Eck scored 21 points and Werth added 11 points.

St. John (4-2) lost momentum in a 2-point game after standout Tanner Halling departed with an ankle injury. Marshall Woolf led the Tigers with nine points.

Hesston (6-0) was led by Carson Richardson with 11 points and Brayden Schilling with 10 points.

MINNEOLA – Minneola's Tuck Lang dominated the final five minutes as the Wildcats turned a 2-point lead into a 58-41 Southern Plains-Iroquois basketball victory over Pawnee Heights.

Pawnee Heights (5-1, 1-1) was paced by Alec Carlson with 21 points, but the Tigers lost momentum after Adam Hands and Harrison VanMeter fouled out. Minneola's all-league Tuck Lang scored 28 points. Minneola (4-2, 2-0) outscored the Tigers 22-7 in the fourth quarter.

"Foul trouble caught up to us," said Pawnee Heights coach Ty Josefiak. "Tuck Lang was the difference. We couldn’t contain him. Once he gets going, he's tough to stop. We didn’t keep the ball out of his hands and he made us pay. We were disappointed how the fourth quarter went. But we're very impressed with how our freshman Carlson competed against one of the best players in our league."
