WICHITA — Macksville Mustang junior Macey Russell broke the 1A state record by one inch while winning the 1A javelin. Centralia's Madison Lueger (144-2) set the previous record in 2018.

Russell, who was seeded eighth in 1A, threw a career best 141-10 on her second attempt in perfect weather conditions. Her final throw was 144-3, 18 feet better than her best throw entering the state meet.

Russell's feat was hard to believe.

"I am still in shock — the best feeling I have ever felt," she said. "I didn't think I was going to be here at this position because last year I got eighth. It felt good to get where I want to be by my senior year. I accomplished it my junior year. I have one more year to do better and break my state record next year."

Pawnee Heights Tiger Alec Carlson earned a runner-up high jump medal (6-2) to go with first, long jump (22-63/4), second, triple jump (44-91/2) and fourth, javelin (160-5).

Pawnee Heights' Olivia Hands earned a runner-up discus medal (111-6).

The Macksville boys earned a third-place 1,600-meter relay medal (3:35.26) with Lance Lickiss, Orion Guevara, Diego Esparza and Ryan Kuckelman.
