Nebraska beats Kansas in 8-Man All-Star game

HAYS — Nebraska seized some early momentum during the Kansas-Nebraska 8-Man All-Star football game on Saturday evening at Fort Hays State University’s Lewis Field Stadium.
Nebraska recorded a safety and also scored a touchdown for 9-0 lead in the first quarter after John Parrish recovered a Kansas fumble in the end zone at the 5:58 mark. Nebraska then used a late scoring drive for a touchdown and held on for a 23-12 victory.
Kansas trailed 16-6 at halftime.
Nebraska running back Sawyer Monroe capped a decisive 78-yard drive with a 1-yard scoring plunge, which ate up 5:01 off the game clock and gave Nebraska a 23-6 lead with 8:49 left in the fourth quarter.
Kansas answered back with Daniel Krehbiel scoring his second touchdown of the game, a 2-yard run with 4:08 remaining to fix the final margin.
Nebraska accumulated 309 yards in total offense, including 185 passing yards. Dwight Hanzel and Michael Koehler were both 7-for-9 passing in trading off at quarterback, Koehler threw for 107 yards and Hanzel threw for 78.
Quivira Heights’ Gunner Phelan shared the quarterback duties for the Kansas team with Reggie Jordan. Phelan completed 8 of 12 passes for 51 yards and Jordan was 0-for-4. Kansas had 161 net yards in total offense, including 110 rushing yards.
Phelan rushed seven times for 27 yards, and Michael Hlavaty of Otis-Bison had one carry for two yards and also caught one pass for six yards.
