A lot of you didn’t watch the Super Bowl. Not watching NFL games is a growing trend. A trend that the “Big Cigars” of the NFL don’t want to admit but that’s another story for another time. If you didn’t watch you missed watching a very good football game. You also missed watching a whole bunch of bad commercials. Commercials that somebody spent millions of dollars making and televising.
It is said that most Super Bowl watchers care more about the parties, more about watching the commercials, than actually watching the football game. If these commercials were the better part of this Super Bowl then I think it was a “Dead On Arrival!”
When you find yourself asking your friends “what the heck are they advertising?”, you’ve probably seen a Super Bowl commercial. Have the clever geniuses that make these commercials outstripped the intelligence of their viewers or-more likely-have the producers of the commercials just not quite grown up yet? KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID becomes the order of the day here! Never have I seen SO MUCH said about SO LITTLE in trying to sell a product. Funny? No. Witty? No. Sells product? No.
Just to make sure that you know I really am a curmudgeon, I didn’t like the halftime show either. If you cannot hear the voice of the lead singer over the background music then how the heck do we know if they can carry a tune? It’s much like me singing in the shower where the noise of the water drowns out my pathetic wailings so much that I think I’m actually pretty good! Frank Sinatra, where are you when we really need you?
I don’t think the punters on the two teams deserve a Super Bowl ring or paycheck. Only one punt in the game? That’s my kind of job!
By my calculations the Chiefs are the world champions. They beat both the Patriots and the Eagles this year, besides, the Eagles coach, Doug Pederson is a former Chiefs coach.
This game came down to whether or not the Eagles’ backup quarterback, Nick Foles, would produce under pressure. He not only did, he was near flawless. Give a ton of credit to the offensive line of the birds. They did not allow Foles to be sacked even once.
Now, back to those high-priced commercials. I still don’t know what the heck they were trying to sell me!
CHALK TALK
— The Kansas Jayhawk football team has a ton of returning starters for next year. In fact, they rate #2 nationally in returning offensive and defensive starters. That’s the good news. The bad news is, those starters only won one game! I’m not sure if this is a positive or not.
— Talk about “No Respect”, former major league pitcher Keith Comstock was once traded from the Oakland Athletics to the Detroit Tigers for $100 and a bag of baseballs. To add to the indignity, he had to deliver the bag of balls to his new team himself!
— This isn’t your usual KU basketball team. They’ve developed the agonizing characteristic of “playing to the competition”. Blowout wins in Allen Fieldhouse “just ain’t happenin’ this year”.
— What’s wrong with the Shockers? Nothing. They are just playing quite a few good basketball teams and finding out that there are “no night off in the AAC”.
— Get ready America. NBC begins foisting the Winter Olympics on us this weekend and you are about to be told about a whole new generation of teenyboppers that can skate, ski, dance and win their way into your hearts. Ah yes, the Olympic Rings. Rings of friendship where just being there and competing is the desired goal UNTIL some judge from a country, who’s name you can’t pronounce, doesn’t give enough points to your favorite. THEN it’s about winning and $dollars, lots of $ dollars!
