Panther bowlers sweep WAC honors

LIBERAL – Great Bend’s Bryce Moore repeated as Western Athletic Conference Bowler of the Year and teammate Paige Wagner swept the girls WAC Bowler of the Year honor at Tuesday’s league tournament.

Moore posted a 219.2 scoring average and shot 610 (221-201-188) to finish third at Tuesday’s WAC Tournament. Wagner finished with a 197.1 scoring average and placed first in the WAC Tournament with a 617 score (180-244-223).

Garden City’s boys scored 19 points Tuesday to edge the Panthers 68-63 for the WAC championship by scoring a 2,251 series and winning seven of nine Baker points. Great Bend scored a 3,880 series and downed Dodge City 2-1 and Liberal in Baker games.

Panther Evan Shell (180.3) joined Garden City’s Kaden Whitehurst (201), WAC medalist Caleb Carr (199.6) and Ty Weilert (180.8) and Dodge City’s

Logan Esquibel (180.2) on the All-WAC first team. Great Bend’s Corbin Stanley (178.8) and Dalton Murphy (171.6) earned honorable mention honors.

Garden City’s girls dominated with a 78-57 point total over Great Bend.

The Lady Buffs repeated as WAC champions, dominating the rest of the WAC opponents and finishing with a 78-57 point victory over Great Bend. The Buffaloes scored 19 points Tuesday. The Buffaloes beat Great Bend 2-1, Dodge City 2-1 and Liberal 3-0.

Others earning first-team All-WAC honors were Dodge City’s Camryn Lenz (190) and Garden City’s Holly Bridges (186.7), Angelina Leeper (185.4), Karly Larson (184.1) and Emilee Giger (170.3).

Great Bend’s Lexy Fox (161.3) and Aliyah Fryberger (147.7) earned honorable mention All-WAC honors.

Great Bend will compete at the 5A bowling regional Monday at Hutchinson’s bowling alley. The top three boys and girls finishers qualify for the 5A state tournament.
