The 170-mile return trip from Liberal is guaranteed to a happy Homecoming for the Great Bend football team if they surprise Western Athletic rival Liberal Friday.

The Panthers (0-5) are seeded 16th for the second consecutive year in 4A West football and would draw No. 1 McPherson (5-0). A win would move the Panthers to the 15th spot.

Great Bend QB Cayden Scheuerman has passed for 370 yards and four touchdowns with eight interceptions. TB Cody Miller has gained 228 yards. WR Braylon Council has 219 yards receiving and three scores.

“We know how important it is to secure one win,” said Great Bend coach Erin Beck. “I’m encouraged because our defensive and offensive line is improving. You always want to win the battle up front.

Back Cody Miller shows good vision. He’s running hard.”

The Panthers trailed 17-14 against Dodge City last week before the Red Demons scored two clinching touchdowns.

“I’m encouraged by those good moments, but you’ve got to put everything together for four quarters,” Beck said. “We need to get off the field defensively on third down. We’ll continue to do a better job to put our players in a better spot to succeed. We’re practicing and playing football the right way.”

Defensively, safeties Brad Beck (48 tackles) and Paco Hernandez (42) have delivered back-line defense with DE Scott Heilman securing four tackles for loss. Trystian Juarez (39 tackles) and Aldo Avalos (36 stops, 6 for loss) lead the Redskins.

Liberal QB Brooks Kappelmann has thrown for 629 yards and five touchdowns with four interceptions. WR Izzy Garcia-Rotolo has 301 yards and two TDs. TB Hunter Huskey has scored seven touchdowns with 537 yards rushing, 107 per game.

“They’ll run everything from a spread offense look to three backs in the backfield,” Beck said. “They’ll run power and inside zone runs. Then, they’ll run deep outs and mesh routes.”
