When Great Bend started its journey into 4A postseason football, there were high playoff hopes for 2020 and 2021.

Two years later, the Panthers (0-7, 0-3) ride a 15-game losing streak into Friday’s regular-season home finale against rival Garden City. It’s the longest losing streak in 31 years when the Panthers snapped a 29-game losing streak with a 36-14 win over Salina South.

The Panthers’ 4A playoff scenario is simple. A victory would insure the Panthers will be the 15th seed and likely send the Panthers to Wamego (6-1) next week. A loss to Garden City would likely produce the same result. The Panthers will play two 6A teams and five 5A teams.

Garden City (4-3, 2-1 WAC) will seek a share of the Western Athletic Conference football title with Dodge City and Hays High.

The Panthers will face a run-heavy Garden City ballclub that averages 228 yards. Garden City RB Zach Keosengphet (420), Colin Kleystuber (377) and Emmanual Charlite (223) lead a balanced offense. QB Caleb Wiese operates the worst passing team in the WAC with 267 yards passing.

Great Bend QB Cayden Scheuerman (650 yards, 5 TDs) has sparked an improving passing game. WR Braylon Council (32/371, 3 TDs) and WR Stefan Spray (127) lead the receivers. TB Cody Miller (352) continues to improve.

The Panthers’ defense continues to compete behind S Brad Beck (55 tackles) LB Mathew Moeder (54) and S Paco Hernandez (53 tackles). The Buffaloes’ defensive stoppers are Alonso Marquez (59), Caleb Wiese (58) and Sergio Garcia (56).
