Panther girls finish fourth

EMPORIA – Considering the Great Bend girls had never won a first-round game, a 1-2 finish at the Glacier’s Edge Tournament should be a promising sign.

The Panthers accomplished that feat with a hard-fought 38-36 victory over Goddard Eisenhower for their third win after a 1-20 record last year. But the Panthers dropped their next two games against tough competition. Great Bend (3-10) returns home Tuesday against 4A Wamego.

The Panthers ended with a 47-27 loss to Emporia in Saturday’s third-place showdown. Great Bend (3-10) played with energy and hustle, but a typical lack on offense cost them again. The Panthers trailed 13-0 after one quarter and never caught up. The Panthers were hurt by 7 of 19 free throw shooting.

Sydney Unruh led the way with eight points and Taryn Warren and Jenna Mauler each added five points. Emporia (6-5) was led by Mya Tovar with 12 points.

WASHBURN RURAL 57, PANTHERS 30 (semifinal) – Washburn Rural held the Panthers to 1 of 20 first-half shooting to roar to a 29-4 halftime lead. Washburn Rural (9-2) outscored the Panthers 28-26 after halftime.

Taryn Warren continued to perform well with eight points and Candice Smith added six points. Washburn’s Kasey Hamilton scored 17 points.

PANTHERS 38, EISENHOWER 36 (first round) – Great Bend’s Jaclynn Schroeder nailed a 3-pointer  for a 37-35 lead in overtime as the Panthers escaped with a first-round victory. Sydney Unruh scored a 3-pointer and Taryn Warren hit a 2-pointer in overtime. Sydney Unruh hit a free throw for a 38-36 lead.

Unruh led the Panthers with 11 points and Warren added nine points. Late in regulation, Schroeder converted a free throw for a 29-28 lead. The Panthers converted six 3-pointers to outscore Eisenhower 18-3 from long range.

Eisenhower’s Kennedy Nicholson converted a free throw for a 29-29 tie after four quarters. Nicholson scored 14 points.
