DODGE CITY – The Great Bend girls scored 11 points to edge Garden City 64-57 to capture Wednesday’s Western Athletic Conference bowling championship.
Panther third-place finisher Kaylin Wahlmeier rolled a season high 635 series (225-209-201). Last year's WAC Bowler of the Year Paige Wagner placed fourth at 598 (182-212-204). The Panthers' other players were seventh-place Addison Ehrlich, 538 (225-209-201); 18th-place Sahara Rziha, 463 (162-116-185); 20th-place Nicole Griffin, 421 (143-149-129); 22nd-place Kristy Wittig, 391 (151-114-125).
"The girls bowled well," said Great Bend coach David Feldbauer. "Our girls picked it up from last year."
Garden City's Holly Bridges won the WAC Bowler of the Year honors after scoring 743 (247-258-238) for a high average (211). Wagner earned the second high average (204). Surprising Dodge City (3,912) beat Garden City (3,851) with Great Bend (3,828) placing third. The Panthers beat Dodge City 2-1 and Liberal 2-1, but lost 2-1 to Garden City in Baker games.
Garden City's boys won the WAC championship (71.5) over runner-up Great Bend (59). Garden City's Kaden Whitehurst placed second 658 (200-234-224) and earned WAC Bowler of the Year honors for high average (217). Last year's WAC Bowler of the Year Bryce Moore placed runner-up (216).
Great Bend's Caleb Murphy earned medalist honors, 668 (247-154-267). Other Panthers bowlers were sixth-place Corbin Stanley, 603 (189-193-223); eighth-place Bryce Moore, 578 (181-203-194); 12th-place Bradley Heine, 531 (194-164-173); 18th-place Dylan Ferguson, 485 (138-191-156); and 23rd-place Ashton Ensley, 397 (139-143-115).
The Panthers beat Dodge City 3-0 and Liberal 2-1 in Baker games, and lost 2-1 to Garden City.
The Panthers will compete in the 5-1A regional at Walnut Bowl Tuesday starting at 8:50 a.m. Seven regional champions qualify for the 5-1A state and three additional teams qualify.
