The Wichita North Redskins spoiled Great Bend's girls soccer opener with a 10-0 victory in Tuesday's home opener at Cavanaugh Field. The Panthers (0-1) return home Thursday against Hays High to open Western Athletic Conference play.
North's athletic Jasmine Guzman scored four goals and added an assist to help the Redskins lead 8-0 at halftime. Emily Martinez and Aguilera each scored two goals. Aubrey Shurley, Maley Hansen also converted goals.
The Panthers had trouble adjusting to the speed and talent of the Redskins, who dominated time of possession. Great Bend played better after halftime and held the Redskins scoreless for 17 minutes after trailing 8-0
Great Bend started a lineup of goalie Grecia Dominquez, defenders Sage Simon, Nineth Pereya, Jazmin Calzada, Melissa Gutierrez, Eva Garcia, midfielders Evelyn Luna, Mayra Gonzalez, Roxana Rodriguez and forwards Jillian Reimer and Betsy Ramirez.
"We learned a lot tonight because we're getting to know each other on the field," said Great Bend coach Margarita Ayala. "The first half was tough. We struggled with our defense. We made a lot of substitutions to find out where everybody belongs on the field. We had better effort that second half.
Great Bend's tandem of Reimer and Calzada worked together for a few offensive runs, but were unable to get the ball past goalie Karen Triana-Soto. Defender Marissa Esparza cleared the ball out of trouble to help goalie Grecia Dominguez, who made several dazzling saves.
